India is preparing to launch the U-WIN portal nationwide, similar to the Covid-19 vaccine management system Co-WIN. Expected by the end of August, U-WIN will revolutionize how immunizations are tracked across the country. Currently, it is undergoing pilot testing in all states and Union Territories except West Bengal, which is yet to begin uploading data.

The U-WIN platform is designed to maintain an electronic registry of routine immunizations, focusing on pregnant women and children under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). It aims to streamline vaccination efforts by recording every vaccination event digitally. This initiative was highlighted in the interim Budget for 2024-2025, emphasizing its importance alongside Mission Indradhanush.

“This platform will digitally record every vaccination event for 2.9 crore pregnant women and 2.6 crore infants annually, administering vaccines for diseases like diphtheria, measles, rubella, and tetanus,” explained an official.

A key feature of U-WIN is its ability to generate a QR-based e-vaccination certificate, similar to the Covid vaccination certificate. This certificate can be easily accessed by citizens, eliminating the need for physical records. Currently, vaccination records under UIP are maintained manually, posing logistical challenges.

“U-WIN will digitize session planning, update vaccination status in real-time, and address issues like lack of individual tracking and awareness about session locations,” added officials.

Moreover, the platform aims to be a comprehensive source of information for immunization services, recording pregnancy details, newborn registration, and immunization status in real-time. As of July 9, 2024, the pilot phase has registered 5.33 crore beneficiaries, conducted over 83.55 lakh vaccination sessions digitally, and recorded 18.15 crore vaccine doses.

The U-WIN portal will also facilitate self-registration for vaccinations through its web portal or Android app. Citizens can choose vaccination centers, schedule appointments, and receive automated SMS alerts for registration confirmation, dose administration, and reminders for upcoming doses.

Additionally, U-WIN supports frontline workers in digitally recording vaccination events for accurate record-keeping. This initiative aims to reduce zero-dose cases among children and ensure access to vaccination services for migratory populations.

The U-WIN portal represents a significant step towards enhancing India’s immunization program by leveraging digital technology. By providing easy access to vaccination records and simplifying the vaccination process, U-WIN aims to ensure timely and comprehensive immunization coverage across the nation.
