India On High Alert: Mpox Scare Grips Nation as High-Level Meeting Convened in Delhi

New Delhi, 20th August: A sudden surge in mpox cases globally has put India on high alert, with the country closely monitoring the situation and taking proactive measures to prevent an outbreak. To assess the prevailing scenario and formulate a comprehensive response strategy, Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary P K Mishra chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness for Mpox amid enhanced surveillance for prompt detection.

Mpox Outbreak In India: Has It Already Entered The Country?

Health officials across the country are on high alert, with intensified surveillance measures in place at airports and other entry points. The government is leaving no stone unturned to prevent a potential mpox outbreak within India’s borders. The upcoming meeting in Delhi is expected to bring together key stakeholders, including health experts, epidemiologists, and policymakers, to discuss the latest developments and chart out a robust action plan.

“No reported case of Mpox in the country as of now, and the risk of a large outbreak with sustained transmission is low, as per the current assessment,” said officials.

Mpox: An Analysis of How The Virus Transmits

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a rare viral infection that can cause flu-like symptoms, fever, chills, and a rash. While the disease is generally mild, it can be severe in some cases, particularly among pregnant women, newborns, and immunocompromised individuals. The recent resurgence of mpox cases in several countries has sparked concerns about its potential spread to other regions.

The World Health Organisation has declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in view of its prevalence and spread across many parts of Africa. As per an earlier statement from WHO, 99,176 cases and 208 deaths had been reported due to Mpox from 116 countries globally since 2022.

Is India Ready To Tackle The Mpox Outbreak?

India has a strong track record in containing infectious diseases, and the government is confident in its ability to effectively manage any potential monkeypox outbreak. The upcoming meeting in Delhi is seen as a crucial step in strengthening the country’s preparedness and response capabilities.

Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary P K Mishra said, “Presently 32 labs are equipped for testing. Protocols for prevention and treatment of the disease should be disseminated on a large scale, stressing that an awareness campaign among healthcare providers regarding the signs and symptoms of the disease and the need for timely notification to the surveillance system”.

Monkeypox Outbreak: How To Stay Safe?

Health authorities are urging the public to be vigilant and follow basic hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. While the risk of a widespread mpox outbreak in India remains low, it is essential to stay informed and take necessary precautions.

The government is also working on increasing awareness about monkeypox through public health campaigns and educational initiatives. Early detection and isolation of cases are crucial for preventing the further spread of the disease.

As the situation evolves, the government is committed to keeping the public informed about the latest developments and taking all necessary steps to protect the health and well-being of its citizens.
