Diwali 2026: Diwali is just around the corner, and many people are looking for an effective yet affordable skincare routine to achieve healthy, radiant skin for the festive celebrations. However, achieving a natural glow does not necessarily require expensive products or elaborate treatments. Dermatologists emphasise the importance of maintaining a consistent skincare routine and avoiding common mistakes that can affect skin health.

As Diwali 2026 approaches, Dr Aditi Deshpande, MBBS, MD Dermatology, Renee Skin Clinic, Mumbai, shares six common skincare mistakes to avoid for healthy, glowing skin.

Diwali 2026 Skincare Tips You Must Follow

Here are the 6 basic and easy steps to follow in order to maintain a healthy and glowing skin this festive season:

1. Avoid Over-Exfoliating Your Skin

Exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and improve skin texture. However, exfoliating too frequently or using harsh scrubs and strong exfoliating acids can damage the skin barrier. Studies have shown that over-exfoliation may lead to redness, dryness, irritation, sensitivity and increased discomfort.

2. Avoid Trying Too Many New Skincare Products

Festive season promotions and beauty trends can make it tempting to experiment with new serums, face masks, moisturisers and treatments. However, introducing several unfamiliar products at the same time can increase the risk of irritation or an allergic reaction. It can also become difficult to identify which product is responsible if your skin develops redness, itching or breakouts.

3. Never Skip Sunscreen

One common skincare mistake is assuming that sunscreen is necessary only when stepping outside. While direct sun exposure is an important concern, UVA rays can also pass through window glass. This means prolonged exposure near windows may contribute to skin ageing and pigmentation. Skipping sunscreen during the festive season can undermine an otherwise consistent skincare routine.

4. Sleeping With Makeup

Late-night Diwali parties and celebrations can leave you too tired to follow your usual skincare routine. However, sleeping with makeup on is a habit worth avoiding. Makeup, sunscreen, sweat, oil and environmental impurities can remain on the skin if they are not properly removed. This may contribute to clogged pores, irritation and breakouts, particularly in people with acne-prone skin.

5. Keep Your Body Well Hydrated

A glowing complexion is not just about using brightening serums or face masks. Healthy-looking skin also needs adequate hydration and a well-functioning skin barrier. Skipping moisturiser, using harsh cleansers or repeatedly applying strong active ingredients can leave the skin feeling tight, dry and uncomfortable. Dehydrated skin may also appear less fresh and radiant.

6. Avoid Aggressive Skin Treatments

Chemical peels, intensive exfoliation and certain in-clinic procedures may help address specific skin concerns when performed under professional guidance. However, trying an unfamiliar or aggressive treatment just a few days before Diwali can be risky. Some procedures may cause temporary redness, peeling, sensitivity or irritation. The recovery period varies depending on the treatment, skin type and individual response.

Speaking to HealthWireMedia.com, Dr Deshpande noted that, “Ultimately, achieving healthy, radiant skin does not require an elaborate routine or overnight solutions. Focus on gentle cleansing, regular moisturisation and daily sun protection. Consistency is key to maintaining skin health, while persistent skin concerns should be addressed with appropriate dermatological guidance.”
