In August 2022, she admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for a similar gastrointestinal issue and had undergone a minor surgical procedure. In 2023, she had briefly visited the United States for a routine health check-up.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to send his wishes, saying, “Praying for the speedy recovery and good health of Smt. Sonia Gandhi Ji.” Several Chief Ministers, Members of Parliament, and state leaders also expressed concern and offered prayers.

Sonia Gandhi continues to be a respected figure in Indian politics, known for her decades-long leadership and the role she played in stabilising the Congress party during critical political transitions. Despite handing over active responsibilities to her son Rahul Gandhi, she continues to hold significant influence over strategic decision-making in the party.

What Is Gastroenterology and Why It Matters in Elderly Care

Surgical gastroenterology focuses on treating disorders of the digestive tract including the stomach, intestines, esophagus, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. In elderly patients, gastrointestinal issues are not uncommon and can range from minor infections to more chronic conditions like ulcers, reflux, gastritis, and blockages. Age-related physiological changes and a history of chronic illness may increase the risk of complications, which is why expert care and close monitoring become essential.

According to health experts, early symptoms like abdominal discomfort, bloating, acidity, or loss of appetite should not ignored, especially in individuals over the age of 70. Regular screenings, dietary control, and prompt medical attention are key to avoiding escalation.

As of now, Sonia Gandhi remains under medical supervision and expected to continue her stay in the hospital for the next 24–48 hours until doctors satisfied with her recovery. Her condition said to be stable, and there is no immediate cause for alarm. The nation waits in hope and prayer for her swift recovery, as wishes continue to pour in from political leaders, party workers, and citizens across the country.
