New Delhi, 19 September, 2025: Navaratri is one of the most significant Hindu festivals, marked by nine days of devotion, fasting, and celebration. While fasting during Navaratri is a spiritual and cultural practice, it often raises concerns for expectant mothers. Many pregnant women wonder whether it is safe to fast during these nine days without harming themselves or their unborn child. The answer is not simple—it depends on the woman’s health, trimester, and medical guidance.

Fasting and Pregnancy: What Experts Say

Pregnancy is a time when a woman’s body requires additional nutrients, energy, and hydration to support both her health and the baby’s growth. Doctors usually advise against long fasting hours, as nutritional deficiencies or dehydration may lead to complications such as:

  • Low blood sugar levels
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Dehydration
  • Acidity and indigestion
  • Reduced fetal growth if prolonged nutritional gaps occur

However, many women still wish to fast for spiritual reasons. In such cases, experts recommend modified fasting rather than strict abstinence from food and water.

Safe Fasting Practices for Pregnant Women During Navratri

If a doctor gives approval, pregnant women can fast with certain precautions:

  1. Stay Hydrated
Drink enough water, coconut water, lemon water, or buttermilk throughout the day. Dehydration can be harmful to both mother and baby.
  2. Eat Small, Nutritious Meals
Instead of staying empty-stomach, opt for sattvik foods allowed during Navratri—such as fruits, makhana, sabudana khichdi, kuttu atta rotis, sweet potatoes, and dairy products.
  3. Include Protein-Rich Foods
Paneer, nuts, milk, and yogurt can provide much-needed protein during fasting.
  4. Avoid Fried and Oily Foods
Navratri snacks like pakoras and chips can cause acidity and discomfort. Light home-cooked meals are safer.
  5. Rest Well
Pregnancy already brings fatigue, and fasting may add more strain. Adequate rest and avoiding overexertion are crucial.
  6. Listen to Your Body
If you feel dizzy, excessively weak, or experience abdominal pain, it’s important to break the fast immediately and consult a doctor.

Who Should Avoid Fasting During Pregnancy?

Not all pregnant women should attempt fasting. Those with the following conditions must refrain and prioritize health:

  • High-risk pregnancies
  • Gestational diabetes or thyroid problems
  • Low blood pressure
  • Severe anemia
  • Multiple pregnancies (twins or triplets)

In such cases, fasting could endanger both the mother and the baby.

The Spiritual Aspect

Many spiritual leaders also emphasize that devotion during Navratri is not just about food abstinence. Prayers, meditation, chanting mantras, and following a sattvik lifestyle can also honor the goddess without putting health at risk.

Fasting during Navratri while pregnant is a personal choice that must be made with medical consultation and proper precautions. If done safely with adequate nutrition and hydration, modified fasting may be possible for some women. However, maternal and fetal health should always remain the top priority.

As doctors often say: “A healthy mother means a healthy baby.”
