Maharashtra: Reports 28 cases of the Zika virus this year, the highest number

Three new cases of the Zika virus have been reported in Pune city: a man, 49, from Lohegaon; a woman, 27, from Kothrud

On Wednesday, Pune city reported three more cases of the Zika virus infection. This brings the total number of cases in Pune to 24 and in Maharashtra to 28, which is the highest number of cases this year.

According to Dr. Kalpana Baliwant, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) health officer, three new Zika virus cases have been reported in Pune city: a woman, 27, from Kothrud; a man, 49, from Lohegaon; and a girl, 14, from Tulshibaug Colony, Sahakar Nagar.

The Kothrud woman experienced joint pain, rash, and fever. On July 6, her samples sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.

July 16, the NIV received reports from the NIV, which verified her infection with the virus.

On July 7, the man from Lohegaon sent samples to NIV after he also complained of symptoms like fever, rash, and body aches. On Tuesday, tests reveals that these were infectious with the Zika virus. The man recently had an angioplasty for a cardiac condition, according to Dr. Suryakant Devkar, assistant health officer of the PMC.

The girl, on the other hand, experienced headache, rash, and fever. On July 8, her samples were sent to the NIV for testing, and on Tuesday, the NIV reports confirm that she was infectious with the Zika virus.

On Wednesday, Dr. Baliwant added that the NIV Pune had received 12 samples from suspected patients. Seven of these samples come from expectant mothers; three come from Kalas; two come from Kharadi; and and one each from Pashan and Kondhwa.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has recorded 24 cases of Zika virus infection since June 20, including 10 cases involving pregnant women. According to Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, joint director of health services.

every case in the Pune district has been reported in less than a month since June 20. Ten ward offices—Kare Nagar-Warje, Hadapsar, Kothrud-Bavdhan, Aundh-Baner, Sinhagad Road, Nagar Road, Kondhwa-Yewalewadi, Yerawada, Lohegaon, and Dhankawadi-Sahakarnagar—have active Zika virus transmission.

Zika virus infection is being locally transmitting in Pune.

According to experts from the India Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE). If more samples Have tested, there may be a chance that more cases will be reported. Compared to other cities that have previously reported virus cases—Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Kerala—the Zika virus situation in Pune is different. There are irregular cases of Zika virus infection in Pune. The Zika virus infection cases are isolating and in small groups in other cities around the nation. The experts from ICMR-NIE believe that mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus are probably present in Pune in a number of areas.

On the other hand, a 50-year-old woman living in Belsar village of Purandar tehsil in Pune district was the first person in Maharashtra to be diagnose with the Zika virus in July 2021. In 2021, the state reported 27 cases of virus infection; three cases were reported in 2022; and fifteen cases were reported in 2023. The state has reported 28 cases of virus infection this year, including 2 cases from Pune’s rural areas (Saswad and Bhugaon), 1 case from Sangamner, and 1 case from Kolhapur. Of these, 24 cases are from Pune’s city.
