Vision damage is a significant issue that disturbs daily life. As per a report from the CDC shows that 93 million adult people in the US are at a higher risk of vision damage. Although it is not always possible to reinstate the vision loss people suffer from, it is possible to take certain precautions that help safeguard eyes and vision. Here are some lifestyle conducts that are effective in protecting eye health.

Eye exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause severe damage with time. Sunglasses can protect from damaging UV rays, easing the risk of eye ailments such as sunburn, cataracts, eye cancer, and abnormal growths around the eye. Polarized sunglasses with smoke or gray lenses provide the finest shield against the sun’s rays and ease glare. Extended screen time can lead to pain in the neck and eyes, hazy vision, dry eyes, digital eye strain or computer vision disorder, and headaches. Using the 20-20-20 rule can avert computer vision syndrome. Each 20 minutes, people should look at something which is located at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Reading a book while holding it closely for a long time can cause myopia or nearsightedness in which far-away objects become blurred while up-close objects are clear. People should follow the 20-20-20 rule and take book breaks. Regular workouts help protect eye health encouraging healthy blood vessels and easing the risk of being diagnosed with glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Spending time outdoors prevents nearsightedness in adolescents and adults. Smoking can elevate the risk of eye issues such as cataracts or age-related macular degeneration. Smokers are at three times greater risk of developing cataracts and four times greater risk of macular degeneration. Smoking can lead to Graves’ eye disease, glaucoma, and thyroid eye disease, and cause the onset or the growth of diabetic retinopathy. Consuming a diet rich in beta carotene, vitamins A, E, and C, zinc, lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, and zeaxanthin can ease inflammation in eye tissue, increase cellular growth, and eliminate free radicals that are injurious to eye health. People should avoid rubbing their eyes which can cause eye damage or other infections. Rubbing the eyes too hard can cause blurred or reduced vision, inflammation, eye and light sensitivity, and headaches. Keeping hand hygiene and washing hands before touching your eyes can help protect the well-being of your eyes.
