Delhi Water Minister Atishi, who has been on an indefinite fast since June 21 to protest against the alleged reduced supply of water by the Haryana Government, leading to massive water shortage in the national capital, was rushed to the emergency ward of Lok Nayak Hospital early on Tuesday after her blood sugar level dropped to 36 mg/dL.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stated that the leader’s blood sugar level dropped to 43 mg/dL at midnight and dropped further to 36 mg/dL, adding doctors advised immediate hospitalisation.

Saurabh Bhardwaj posted on X on Tuesday, “Atishi’s blood sugar level fell to 36 mg/dL, so she has been admitted to the LNJP hospital.” He said the AAP heeded the doctor’s advice immediately after finding the blood sugar level to be 36 mg/dL via a portable glucometer.

What Happens When Your Blood Sugar Levels Drop Suddenly?

Our bodies need a delicate balance to operate well, and keeping blood sugar levels steady is a key part of this. When blood sugar drops suddenly, it can affect how you feel and function.

Blood sugar can dip suddenly, known as hypoglycemia, for various reasons. Skipping meals or not eating enough is a typical cause—without food, your body lacks the glucose needed for stable blood sugar. Medications, too much alcohol, intense exercise without proper eating, and health issues like diabetes can also trigger these drops.

Signs of Low Blood Sugar

It’s important to recognize low blood sugar signs early. Common symptoms include feeling shaky, dizzy, sweaty, hungry, irritable, and confused. Some might also see blurry, feel weak, or struggle to concentrate. Severe cases can lead to fainting or seizures, needing quick medical help.

Effects on Physical and Mental Health

Sudden low blood sugar can cause physical issues like weakness, tiredness, headaches, and muscle cramps. It can also mess with coordination, making accidents more likely. Mentally, it can cloud your thinking, making it hard to focus, remember things, and control moods.

Managing Low Blood Sugar

Handling hypoglycemia well is key. If you notice low blood sugar symptoms, eat fast-acting sugars like fruit juice, glucose tablets, or candy to boost levels quickly. Follow up with a balanced meal to keep levels steady. Those with diabetes or other health conditions should monitor their blood sugar and collaborate with doctors to adjust treatments and habits.

Preventing Low Blood Sugar

To prevent sudden drops, stick to healthy eating and regular meals. A balanced diet with complex carbs, protein, and fiber helps maintain stable blood sugar. Avoid too much alcohol, stay hydrated, and exercise regularly to support blood sugar balance.
