‘Worst Is Yet To Come’: IMD Warns of Severe Heatwave In India In May, Predicts Hotter Days Ahead

New Delhi, 01 May 2025: As India steps into May 2025, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stark warning: the country is poised to experience an increase in heatwave days, with temperatures expected to soar beyond typical seasonal norms .

Heatwave Days Expected to Increase

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra announced that several regions across India are likely to witness 2 to 7 heatwave days in May, which is 1 to 4 days higher than the usual average . The states anticipated to be most affected include Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal . Additionally, parts of Gujarat, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, adjoining Telangana, and north Karnataka are also expected to experience more heatwave days than usual .

While northern India is likely to receive above-average rainfall, other parts—especially the northwest, central, and northeast—may experience drier-than-usual conditions . However, frequent and intense thunderstorms, and ‘above normal’ rainfall in May are likely to prevent temperatures from rising to the levels seen in May 2024 .

Staying Hydrated and Healthy During a Heatwave

With the anticipated rise in temperatures, it’s crucial to adopt measures to stay hydrated and healthy:

  • Drink Plenty of Water: Consume water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration can occur quickly in high temperatures .
  • Avoid Caffeinated and Sugary Drinks: Beverages like tea, coffee, and soft drinks can dehydrate the body. Opt for water, coconut water, or electrolyte-rich drinks .
  • Wear Appropriate Clothing: Dress in loose, light-colored clothing to reflect heat. Using hats, sunglasses, and sunblock can provide additional protection .
  • Stay Indoors During Peak Heat: Avoid outdoor activities between 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun’s intensity is at its peak .
  • Use Cooling Methods: Take cool showers, use fans, and keep your living space well-ventilated. Applying damp cloths to the head and neck can also help .
  • National Disaster Management Authority
  • Monitor for Heat-Related Illnesses: Be aware of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and muscle cramps. Seek medical attention if these occur .

The IMD’s forecast underscores the importance of preparedness and proactive measures to combat the impending heatwave. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, individuals can safeguard their health during this period of extreme temperatures.
