Uric acid problems are increasingly common today. This issue is no longer limited to older adults—many young people are also experiencing high uric acid levels. Along with joint pain, one noticeable symptom can be the presence of uric acid crystals in urine.

Dr. P.V.G.S. Prasad, Senior Consultant Urologist, Andrologist, Robotic and Renal Transplant Surgeon at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, explains that uric acid crystals in urine are a common condition that should not be ignored. Under a microscope, these crystals appear like tiny red or brown sand-like particles. This usually happens when the urine becomes highly acidic.

Signs of Uric Acid Crystals in Urine

The presence of crystals itself is a sign, but other symptoms may also appear and should not be ignored:

  • Pain or heaviness in the lower abdomen
  • Cloudy or light pink-colored urine
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Burning sensation or sharp pain while urinating
  • Fever in some cases, especially if there is an infection

Doctors advise consulting a healthcare professional immediately if you notice any of these symptoms, as ignoring them can lead to serious complications.

Causes of Uric Acid Crystals in Urine

The main reason for uric acid crystals is an increase in uric acid levels in the body. This can happen due to:

  • High intake of purine-rich foods such as red meat, seafood, and certain pulses
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Medical conditions like chemotherapy
  • Metabolic syndrome and kidney stones

In these conditions, excess uric acid in the body can lead to the formation of crystals.

What Are the Risks?

If not treated on time, these crystals can accumulate in the kidneys and form stones or cause blockages in the urinary tract. This may lead to kidney damage. Therefore, it is important not to ignore the symptoms for long.

How to Prevent High Uric Acid

Uric acid levels can be controlled by following some simple lifestyle tips:

  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking 2–3 liters of water daily to dilute urine
  • Limit high-purine foods like red meat and seafood
  • Reduce alcohol consumption and avoid smoking
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Include citrus fruits like lemon and orange, which help make urine more alkaline
  • Practice Kegel exercises if you have difficulty controlling urination

When to See a Doctor?

If you notice uric acid crystals along with other symptoms, consult a doctor immediately. They may recommend tests such as a urine test, CT scan, or cystoscopy. Early diagnosis and treatment can help manage the condition effectively.

Important Note

Uric acid crystals are not a minor issue, but with the right information and timely treatment, they can be managed effectively. Pay attention to your body’s signals and seek medical advice promptly.

Highlights

  • High uric acid levels can lead to crystal formation in urine
