On Wednesday, Health Secretary Apurva Chandra requested states and Union territories to provide an “action taken report” on the security measures they have implemented for doctors and healthcare workers. The deadline for submitting this report is September 10.

Apurva Chandra Background of the Request

This request follows a Supreme Court order from August 22, which called for a meeting with all state Secretaries and Directors General of Police to ensure the safety of doctors at their workplaces. The decision comes after an alarming incident involving the rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata, which has sparked widespread outrage among the medical community.

Key Security Measures

During an August 28 video conference, several important points were discussed to enhance security in healthcare institutions. The 11 key measures mentioned in the letter include:

– Identifying high-risk establishments

– Conducting security audits

– Focusing on high-risk areas

– Installing CCTV surveillance

– Collaborating with local police

– Employing security personnel

– Forming security committees

– Implementing security checks

– Following bereavement protocols

– Deploying patient facilitators

– Engaging trained social workers and volunteers
