New Delhi, 06 September, 2025: Veteran filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, known for his contributions to Bollywood and his role as a father to actor Hrithik Roshan, recently faced a significant health scare that has brought attention to the importance of regular health check-ups, especially for individuals over 45.

Discovery of Carotid Artery Blockage

In July 2025, during a routine full-body health check-up, doctors discovered that both of Rakesh Roshan’s carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain, were over 75% blocked. Remarkably, he exhibited no symptoms of this condition. Roshan shared this revelation on his Instagram, emphasizing the critical nature of the finding and the potential dangers had it gone unnoticed.

“This week has been truly eye-opening. During a routine full-body health check-up, the doctor conducting the sonography for the heart suggested I also do one for the neck. By chance, we found out that although asymptomatic, both my carotid arteries to the brain were above 75% blocked, which if ignored could be potentially dangerous,” Roshan wrote.

Following the diagnosis, he underwent a neck angioplasty to address the blockage. His daughter, Sunaina Roshan, confirmed that the procedure was successful and that he was recovering well .

Previous Battle with Throat Cancer

This isn’t the first time Rakesh Roshan has faced serious health challenges. In December 2018, he was diagnosed with early-stage squamous cell carcinoma of the throat. He publicly shared his diagnosis and underwent surgery, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Remarkably, he continued to maintain his fitness regimen, exercising with his son Hrithik even on the day of his surgery .

Importance of Regular Health Screenings

Roshan’s recent health scare underscores the importance of regular health screenings, particularly for individuals over the age of 45. Carotid artery blockage is a condition that can lead to strokes if left untreated. Since it often presents no symptoms, routine check-ups are crucial for early detection.

Healthcare professionals recommend that adults over 45 undergo regular screenings that include:

  • Blood pressure monitoring: High blood pressure is a significant risk factor for carotid artery disease.
  • Cholesterol level checks: Elevated cholesterol can contribute to artery blockages.
  • Ultrasound of the neck: This can detect blockages in the carotid arteries.
  • Lifestyle assessments: Evaluating diet, exercise, and smoking habits.

By identifying risk factors early, individuals can take proactive steps to manage their health and prevent serious complications.

Roshan’s Advocacy for Health Awareness

Following his experience, Rakesh Roshan has become an advocate for health awareness. He urges individuals, especially those over 45, to prioritize their health by undergoing regular screenings. His message resonates with many, as it highlights the importance of preventive healthcare.

In his Instagram post, he wrote:

“Encouraging all adults aged 45 and over to have regular health check-ups. You never know what’s happening inside.”

His openness about his health challenges and the steps he took to address them serves as an inspiration for others to take their health seriously.

The Role of Family Support

Throughout his health journey, Rakesh Roshan has had the unwavering support of his family. His son, Hrithik Roshan, and daughter, Sunaina Roshan, have been by his side, offering emotional and physical support. The importance of family support during health crises cannot be overstated, as it provides strength and encouragement during challenging times.

Rakesh Roshan’s recent health scare serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of regular health check-ups. Despite leading an active lifestyle and exhibiting no symptoms, he faced a serious health condition that could have had dire consequences if left undetected. His experience underscores the need for individuals, particularly those over 45, to undergo routine screenings to ensure early detection and prevention of potential health issues.

By sharing his story, Rakesh Roshan hopes to inspire others to take proactive steps in managing their health. His journey is a testament to the power of early detection, the importance of family support, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of health challenges.
