New Delhi, August 28: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has taken a decisive step against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, by suspending his membership. This action comes in response to the ongoing investigation into the alleged rape and sexual harassment of a junior doctor by Ghosh.

The Indian Medical Association, in an order, said the committee constituted by IMA national president Dr RV Asokan on Wednesday suo-motu considered the rape and murder case of the postgraduate resident doctor and the subsequent developments at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

In a statement, the IMA said, “The disciplinary committee, duly constituted by National President Dr. RV Asokan, has unanimously decided to suspend the membership of Dr Sandip Ghosh, Vice President, IMA Calcutta Branch.”

The suspension of Ghosh’s IMA membership marks a significant development in the case, sending a strong message about the organization’s commitment to upholding ethical standards within the medical profession. It also highlights the gravity of the allegations against Ghosh and the potential consequences for such misconduct.

Kolkata: Why IMA Suspend Sandip Ghosh’s membership?

The IMA said that its national president visited the victim’s parents, who expressed grievances about Sandip Ghosh’s handling of the situation, citing “lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in appropriate manner befitting the responsibility held by you in your dealings with them”.

Additionally, the IMA Bengal state branch and other medical associations called for action, “citing the nature of disrepute brought by you to the profession on the whole”.

The suspension of Dr. Sandip Ghosh’s IMA membership is a significant development in the case. It sends a strong message about the organization’s commitment to ethical standards and the need to address serious allegations of misconduct. While the investigation continues, it is important to focus on creating a safer and more inclusive environment for all medical professionals.
