New Delhi, September 1: A recent video shared on Instagram has sparked widespread concern among consumers about the authenticity of packaged ripped Mango juices widely available in India. The video, uploaded by a social media user, allegedly reveal the manufacturing process inside a juice processing plant. Showing how the product is made with substances that appear to have little to do with real mangoes.

The clip shows that a yellow liquid is being mixed with red and orange food colouring, sugar syrup, and other chemicals in an industrial churning machine while making the juice. The final product, which bears a resemblance to ripped aam juice, is then bottle and packaging for distribution.

The video caption “Tetra pack ripped aam juice,” implying that the juice see in the video is representative of the popular tetra pack beverages available in the market. The content creator’s post quickly gained traction, prompting a wave of reactions from viewers.

Possible Side Effects Associated with Contaminated Juice

The viral posts have highlighted potential risks associated with the packaging and its contents. While it’s important to approach such claims with caution and verify the information from reliable sources, it’s also prudent to be aware of the potential issues involved.

  1. Foodborne Illness: Contaminated mango juice can harbor harmful bacteria, such as Salmonella, E. coli, or Listeria. Consuming such contaminated juice can lead to foodborne illness, characterized by symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. In severe cases, foodborne illnesses can result in hospitalization or even death.
  2. Allergic Reactions: Mangoes are a common allergen, and individuals with mango allergies should avoid consuming mango juice. Allergic reactions can manifest as skin rashes, hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, or anaphylaxis.
  3. Nutrient Deficiencies: Some mango juice products may be heavily processed, leading to a loss of essential nutrients. Excessive consumption of such processed juice can contribute to nutrient deficiencies, particularly if it replaces whole, unprocessed foods.

Reasons Stay Caution When Consuming Mango Juice

  1. Unregulated Market: The market for mango juice is vast and diverse, with products ranging from fresh, homemade juice to commercially produced options. This lack of regulation can increase the risk of contamination or adulteration.
  2. Unknown Ingredients: Some mango juice products may contain additives, preservatives, or artificial sweeteners that can have negative health implications. It’s important to read the ingredient labels carefully and choose products with minimal added ingredients.
  3. Risk of Contamination: The process of producing mango juice, from harvesting the mangoes to packaging the final product, involves multiple steps that can introduce contaminants. If proper hygiene and sanitation practices are not followed, there is a risk of contamination.

How to Choose Safe Mango Juice?

  1. Check the packaging: Ensure that the packaging is intact and free from any signs of damage.
  2. Read the ingredient label: Choose products with minimal added ingredients and avoid those containing artificial sweeteners or preservatives.
  3. Consider pasteurization: Pasteurization is a process that kills harmful bacteria. Look for products that are pasteurized.
