Sunscreen protects the skin from the harmful UV rays and thus holds the most important place in any skincare routine. Most people feel that applying a single layer of sunscreen gives them optimal sun protection. Let us understand the new concept of sunscreen layering – an approach to applying sunscreen that increases its effectiveness and gives comprehensive coverage. Let us look into the intricacies of sunscreen layering and incorporate this master technique for safeguarding your skin.

What is Sunscreen Layering?

Layering involves application of multiple layers of sunscreen to provide broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. The idea is to create a strong barrier that reduces photoaging, skin cancers, tanning, sun spots and other UV related problems

The Two-Step Strategy

  1. Broad-Spectrum Protection: Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen offering protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Adopt a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher, as recommended by dermatologists. Sunscreens should be applied copiously over all exposed areas of the skin including the face, neck, ears, back, arms, and legs
  2. Reapplication is vital: Apply your sunscreens meticulously every two hourly. When sweating, swimming or engaging in outdoor activities, make sure to reapply even more frequently. Some sunscreens claim to be water resistant but they should still be reapplied after wiping the body.

Suggestions for Sunscreen Layering

  1. Sunscreens should be applied in even and thin layers which allows them to fully absorb inside the skin. Make sure to not miss any gap areas.
  2. Focus more on commonly overlooked areas, such as back of the neck, chest, hands and ears.
  3. Different skin types may need different formulations including gels, creams, lotions, powders or sprays.
  4. Sunscreens may also be topped up with makeup with SPF to provide additional protection. However, it is important to be aware of the potential interactions between products

Sunscreen layering is an effective approach for enhancing sun protection and minimizing the risk of UV skin damage. You can create a robust barrier on your skin by applying multiple even layers of broad spectrum sunscreens which should be repeated at regular intervals. This simple technique ensures that your skin looks consistently younger and refreshed. Strict sun protection is a life long commitment towards the health and wellbeing of your skin.
