New Delhi, September 10: A man who recently travelled from a country experiencing mpox transmission has tested positive for the disease, the Union Health Ministry said on Monday.

The ministry said that a previously suspected case of Mpox (monkeypox) has been verified as a travel-related infection. Laboratory testing has confirmed the presence of mpox virus of the West African clade 2 in the patient. This case is an isolated case, similar to the earlier 30 cases reported in India from July 2022 onwards, and is not a part of the current public health emergency (reported by WHO) which is regarding clade 1 of mpox, it said.

Mpox in India: No Need to Panic, Says Health Ministry

The Indian government has reassured the public that there is no need to panic about the recent detection of mpox cases in the country. While the virus poses a potential threat, experts have emphasized that the chances of a widespread outbreak similar to the COVID-19 pandemic are minimal.

Mpox in India: What We Know About The Virus So Far?

The first confirmed case of mpox in India was reported in July 2022. Since then, the country has recorded a handful of additional cases, primarily among individuals with recent travel history to affected regions.

The Risk of Another Pandemic

While the global monkeypox outbreak has raised concerns, experts have stressed that the risk of a large-scale pandemic is low. Several factors contribute to this assessment, including:

1. Limited Transmission: Mpox is primarily transmitted through close contact with an infected person or animal. This makes it less contagious than viruses like COVID-19, which can spread through airborne transmission.

2. Available Vaccines: The smallpox vaccine, which is also effective against it, is available in India. This provides a valuable tool for preventing the spread of the virus.

3. Strong Public Health Measures: The Indian government has implemented robust public health measures to contain the spread of it. These include contact tracing, isolation of infected individuals, and raising awareness about prevention strategies.

How To Stop The Virus From Spreading: Preventive Measures

To prevent the spread of it, the Indian government has issued guidelines for the public, including:

1. Avoid close contact: Maintain a distance of at least one meter from others.

2. Practice good hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water.

3. Avoid touching your face: This can help prevent the transmission of germs.

4. Get vaccinated: Individuals at high risk of exposure, such as healthcare workers, should consider getting vaccinated against smallpox.

By taking these precautions, we can help prevent the spread of the virus and protect public health. While the detection of it cases in India is a cause for concern, there is no need to panic.
