Influencer Dies After Chugging 2 Bottles of Alcohol in 20 Minutes: Experts Explain What Went Wrong

New Delhi, 26 May 2025: A shocking tragedy has rocked social media after a popular influencer reportedly died following the consumption of two full bottles of alcohol within just 20 minutes. The incident, which took place during a live-streamed drinking challenge, has not only left followers stunned but also sparked serious concerns over the deadly consequences of binge drinking and the growing trend of risky content creation online.

Doctors and health experts have since weighed in on the case, warning about the physiological dangers of acute alcohol poisoning and the deceptive nature of online challenges that glorify excess.

The influencer, who had built a considerable following by participating in online stunts and challenges, reportedly attempted to drink two entire bottles of hard liquor—equivalent to over 1.5 litres of alcohol—within a span of just 20 minutes. Witnesses claim the individual appeared to be in distress shortly after completing the challenge and collapsed off-screen. Emergency services were called, but the influencer was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

The video of the event has since gone viral, triggering widespread condemnation of social media platforms that allow such dangerous content to be published or monetized.

What Went Wrong: The Science Behind Acute Alcohol Poisoning

Experts believe the influencer likely suffered from acute alcohol poisoning, a serious and potentially fatal condition that occurs when a person consumes a toxic amount of alcohol in a short period of time.

“Drinking such a large quantity of alcohol rapidly can overwhelm the body’s ability to process it,” said Dr. Meera Shah, a toxicologist at AIIMS. “The liver metabolizes alcohol at a fixed rate—roughly one drink per hour. If you far exceed that, the alcohol builds up in your bloodstream and depresses vital functions like breathing and heart rate.”

According to medical data, a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above 0.3% can cause unconsciousness, while levels higher than 0.4% can result in coma or death. Two bottles of liquor—especially if consumed quickly and on an empty stomach—can easily raise BAC to lethal levels.

How Alcohol Affects the Body

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, meaning it slows down brain function and neural activity. Here’s what happens when a person consumes an excessive amount in a short time:

  • Brain: Impaired judgment, slowed reaction time, unconsciousness
  • Lungs: Suppression of the respiratory system, potentially leading to respiratory arrest
  • Heart: Irregular heartbeat or even cardiac arrest
  • Liver: Overloaded and unable to filter toxins quickly enough
  • Stomach: Risk of vomiting and choking, especially while unconscious

In this case, the influencer may have experienced respiratory failure or cardiac arrest, either of which can happen suddenly once alcohol hits a toxic threshold in the bloodstream.

The Role of Social Media in Promoting Risky Behaviour

The incident has also reignited the debate over how social media algorithms often reward risky, sensational content with more visibility. Challenges involving extreme eating, drinking, or dangerous stunts tend to garner millions of views, likes, and sponsorship deals, creating immense pressure for influencers to outdo each other.

“There is a psychological element called ‘performance pressure’ where content creators feel the need to shock their audiences to stay relevant,” explained Dr. Arvind Rajan, a clinical psychologist. “Unfortunately, this can lead to real harm when people chase virality without understanding the consequences.”

Platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have all faced criticism for not doing enough to police such content or protect young users from harmful trends.

Health professionals urge people—especially teenagers and young adults—not to follow viral challenges that encourage excessive drinking. Binge drinking is not only harmful but can also become fatal in a matter of minutes.
