New Delhi, 13 November 2024: On Wednesday, a shocking incident unfolded at Chennai’s Kalaignar Centenary Super Specialty Hospital, where a government doctor and associate professor was viciously attacked by the son of a patient. This alarming event has raised serious concerns about the safety of healthcare workers and has ignited a wave of outrage, calling for better protection for those in the medical field. The assailant, identified as Vignesh from Perungalathur, attacked Dr. Balaji Jagannath over issues pertaining to his mother’s treatment. The attack, which involved multiple stabbings, underscores the alarming rise in violence against healthcare professionals and highlights the urgent need for action.
The violent episode took place around 10:15 a.m. in the outpatient department (OPD) of the hospital. Vignesh, disguised as a hospital employee, managed to gain access with an outpatient pass, accompanied by three individuals. After a contentious discussion regarding his mother Prema’s chemotherapy, Vignesh locked the consultation room’s door and launched a brutal attack on Dr. Jagannath, using a concealed kitchen knife to stab him seven times in critical areas, including the neck, ear, chest, head, and abdomen. Eyewitnesses were left horrified by the suddenness and brutality of what transpired.
Following the attack, the hospital staff sprang into action, quickly transferring Dr. Jagannath to the ICU. Fully aware of the severe nature of his injuries, the medical team worked diligently to stabilize him. Dr. Jagannath, who also has a history of heart issues and has recently undergone pacemaker surgery, experienced significant blood loss, likely worsened by his heart medications. A team of skilled surgeons came together to resuscitate him, administering two units of blood and carefully suturing his wounds. As of now, his condition remains critical but stable, with doctors closely monitoring his recovery.
The incident drew an immediate reaction from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who labeled the attack as “shocking.” He confirmed the quick arrest of the suspect and stated, “I have ordered necessary medical treatment for the doctor and a thorough investigation into the incident.” Stalin acknowledged the invaluable contributions of government doctors and promised to enhance safety measures in hopes of preventing similar incidents in the future.
In light of the attack, there has been a renewed focus on hospital security protocols. Health Minister Ma Subramanian defended the hospital’s security measures, asserting that private guards patrol the interior while police maintain presence outside. Nonetheless, the government has initiated an investigation to evaluate the effectiveness of existing security measures and understand how such a violent act could take place in what should be a secure environment.
The Service and PG Doctors Association has firmly condemned the violence against Dr. Jagannath, calling for severe consequences for the attacker. In response to the attack, doctors at KCSSH organized a flash strike, halting all non-emergency services to demand better security for healthcare staff. This collective response highlights the pressing need to address safety concerns within the healthcare sector and signifies a vital call for systematic changes to protect the lives of medical professionals.
Dr. L. Parthasarathy, the Director of KCSSH, emphasized the seriousness of Dr. Jagannath’s injuries, indicating that his recovery would be closely observed in the days ahead. Unfortunately, this incident is part of a troubling trend of rising violence against healthcare workers nationwide. Medical professionals are uniting to advocate for stronger protections and legislation to ensure their safety while they continue to serve patients.
