A two-year-old girl has tested positive for H5N1 causing bird flu in Australia, World Health Organization said on Friday. As per reports, the child has been admitted to the hospital’s intensive care treatment unit after travelling to India.

“This is the first confirmed human infection caused by avian influenza A(H5N1) virus detected and reported by Australia,” the WHO said in a statement.

“Although the source of exposure to the virus in this case is currently unknown, the exposure likely occurred in India” where the girl had travelled, and where this group of “viruses has been detected in birds in the past”, the UN health agency added.

Bird Flu In Humans: How Does H5N1 Virus Infects Human System?

You might have heard about bird flu, known scientifically as the H5N1 virus. It can cause severe diseases in both birds, specifically poultry, and humans. So, it’s essential to know what bird flu is, how it can infect us, and the symptoms we should look out for.

What Is H5N1 Virus?

Primarily affecting birds, the H5N1 virus is a kind of influenza A virus. However, it can also cause severe respiratory illnesses in humans, and in some cases, lead to death. Its high pathogenic nature signifies its ability to cause severe disease.

How Do Humans Get Bird Flu?

Bird flu can infect humans through direct or indirect contact with infected birds or environments contaminated with the virus. Those who work closely with poultry or handle sick birds, risk catching this virus. Eating poultry products contaminated with the virus and not fully cooked also pose a risk.

Bird Flu Symptoms

Breathing Difficulties: A significant sign of bird flu is trouble breathing, including symptoms like cough, sore throat. In severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

High Fever and Chills: High fever, often accompanied by chills and body aches, is a common symptom for those infected with the H5N1 virus.

Digestive Problems: Some people infected with bird flu may experience digestive issues such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. This can further lead to dehydration and imbalances in electrolyte levels.

Muscle Pain: Muscle pain, or myalgia, is another common sign of bird flu, causing body aches and muscle stiffness that can disrupt daily activities.

Rare Neurological Symptoms: In rare occurrences, bird flu can lead to neurological complications like seizures, confusion, and altered mental statuses, which require immediate medical attention.

Avoiding and Treating Bird Flu

The best prevention against bird flu involves good hygiene, avoiding contact with sick birds, and ensuring poultry products are thoroughly cooked. If one suspects infection, immediate medical evaluation is crucial for an early diagnosis and effective treatment.
