In Kerala’s Kozhikode district, a serious mistake occurred at the Government Medical College Hospital on Thursday, May 16. A four-year-old girl was supposed to have surgery to remove an extra finger on her hand, but the doctors performed surgery on her tongue instead.

The girl’s family discovered the mistake after the surgery when they saw cotton stuffed in her mouth. This led them to check further, and they realized that the surgery had been done on her tongue, not her hand as planned.

This error caused a big uproar in Kerala. In response, the state government quickly took action. Dr. Bejohn Johnson, an Associate Professor at the hospital, was suspended while an inquiry is conducted to find out how such a mistake happened.

Health Minister Veena George announced the suspension after receiving a report from the Director of Medical Education. The minister had asked for an immediate investigation into the incident earlier that day. She also directed that a detailed inquiry be conducted and that strict measures be put in place to prevent such mistakes from happening again in the future.

The girl’s family was very upset and reported the incident to the police. They are seeking action against those responsible for this serious error. The family said, “No one should have such an experience again at the Medical College Hospital.” They also mentioned that the child had no issues with her tongue and that the hospital should take responsibility if any complications arise from this incorrect surgery.

According to a family member, the hospital explained that the mix-up happened because surgeries were scheduled for two children on the same date. The doctor involved has apologized to the family for the mistake.

The official statement from the health minister emphasized that hospitals must follow protocols correctly to avoid such errors. The minister has given strict orders to ensure that all procedures are carefully followed in the future to protect patients’ safety.

This incident has highlighted the importance of double-checking all details before performing any medical procedure. The health minister’s swift action shows that the government is taking the matter seriously and is committed to ensuring that such mistakes do not happen again.

In the meantime, the family is waiting for the results of the detailed inquiry. They are hopeful that the investigation will provide answers and that steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents. They also want to ensure that their daughter receives proper care and that her health is not adversely affected by this mistake.

The suspension of the doctor and the ongoing investigation are steps toward accountability and improving patient safety in the hospital. The state government’s quick response aims to restore public trust and reassure families that the healthcare system will address such errors promptly and effectively.
