India is rapidly establishing itself as a premier destination for medical tourism, attracting patients from across the globe seeking high-quality healthcare at affordable prices. By the end of this year, it is anticipate that over 7 million international patients will have sought treatment in India, reflecting a significant rise in medical tourism. This surge is driven by a combination of factors, including advance medical technology, cost-effective treatments, and the availability of highly trains medical professionals.

Surge in International Patients

The number of international patients choosing India for their medical needs has been steadily increasing over the years. Dr. Pooja Khosla, Co-Chairperson, Department of Internal Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, highlights this trend, stating, “India has become a popular destination for international patients. The number of medical tourists coming to India is increasing steadily, as per the surveys it is expect that the number will increase to approximately 7.3 million by the end of this year. Majority of the medical patients are from Southeast Asia, Middle East, Africa, and SAARC region, followed by Australia, Canada, Russia, etc.”

India’s appeal as a medical tourism hub is further bolstered by the presence of world-class healthcare facilities in major cities. “In India, cities like Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai are the preferred medical centres,” Dr. Khosla adds. These cities are equip with state-of-the-art hospitals and clinics that offer a wide range of treatments and procedures, attracting patients who are often seeking specialize care that may not be readily available or affordable in their home countries.

According to Dr. Khosla, India’s success in attracting medical tourists can be attributed to several key factors:
