ICMR to Develop First-Ever Guidelines for Antibiotic Use in Common Infections

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is working on the first-ever comprehensive guidelines for the use of antibiotics in treating common infections like upper respiratory infections, fever, and community-acquired pneumonia. This move aims to ensure antibiotics are used effectively and only when necessary, to avoid misuse.

Evidence-Based Approach

To create these guidelines, ICMR will gather information from existing research. This will involve reviewing past studies and analyses related to antibiotic use. The findings from these reviews will be assessed using a method called GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation). This approach helps determine the strength of the evidence and ensures that the guidelines are based on solid, well-researched information.

Focus Areas

The guidelines will address four key questions:

1. When to Start Antibiotics: Deciding the right time to begin treatment.

2. Which Antibiotics to Use: Recommending the best class of antibiotics to start with.

3. When to Stop Antibiotics: Guidelines on when it’s safe to stop the medication.

4. When to Change Antibiotics: Identifying when a change in antibiotics is necessary if the current one isn’t working.

Call for Research Participation

ICMR has invited researchers to submit their interest in contributing to this important project. By following a systematic, evidence-based process, ICMR hopes to create guidelines that will help doctors make better decisions about when and how to use antibiotics effectively.
