New Delhi, 09 October, 2025: Anxiety and depression are increasingly common in modern life, yet their early signs often go unnoticed or are dismissed as ordinary stress. These conditions usually develop gradually, which is why understanding and identifying the first symptoms is essential for seeking help in time.

In this article, By Dr. Amitabh Saha, Associate Director & Clinical Administrator, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, tells us more about the warning signs that says a person is dealing with silent anxiety and depression.

The earliest indicators are often subtle. For no particular reason, a person may start to feel consistently anxious, lethargic, or emotionally aloof. Daily tasks may begin to feel taxing, motivation may wane, and focus may become challenging. Emotional stress can also be seen by changes in eating, erratic sleep patterns, and the tendency to isolate oneself.

From a medical perspective, ongoing stress along with emotional baggage can create variation in the chemical balance of the brain, especially the dopamine and serotonin levels that affect mood as well as energy. Physical symptoms, including headaches, exhaustion, or gastrointestinal distress, could result from this imbalance. If we ignore these symptoms for a long time, it can have an impact on general health, heart health, and immunity. Some other early symptoms are fatigue, irritability, not feeling fresh even after an adequate duration of sleep, and getting emotional on trivial issues.

Recognising these early changes allows for early intervention. Simple habits like keeping a regular routine, exercising, spending time outdoors, eating balanced meals, and practising mindfulness or relaxation can help improve mood and restore balance. Equally important is talking about what you’re feeling. Sharing your concerns with a friend, family member, or mental health professional can ease the pressure and open the door to effective support.

The key message is that anxiety and depression are not sudden breakdowns but gradual imbalances that can be managed when noticed early. People get depression even without any worldly reasons. Paying attention to how you feel emotionally and physically is not overreacting; it is an act of self-care that can make recovery faster and life healthier
