Mangoes are one of the most popular summer fruits around the world, loved for their sweet, juicy flavor and bright, tropical colours. They are a great source of nutrients like vitamins A, C, and K, fiber, and antioxidants. However, despite their many health benefits, mangoes should be consumed in moderation, as an overdose can lead to several negative side effects.

One of the most significant dangers of consuming too many mangoes is an upset stomach. This is because mangoes are high in fiber, which can be difficult to digest in large quantities. Overeating mangoes can cause bloating, gas, and diarrhea, leading to discomfort and dehydration. Moreover, individuals with irritable bowel syndrome or other digestive issues should be careful about consuming large amounts of mangoes.

Another potential side effect of consuming too many mangoes is allergic reactions. Mangoes contain a substance called urushiol, which is also found in poison ivy and poison oak. While most people can tolerate small amounts of urushiol, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction, including itching, redness, and blisters. Individuals who are allergic to latex or other fruits, such as kiwis, may also be at higher risk of experiencing an allergic reaction to mangoes.

Moreover, mangoes are high in sugar and calories, which can lead to weight gain and blood sugar imbalances if consumed in excess. One medium-sized mango contains around 135 calories and 28 grams of sugar. If you consume several mangoes in a short period, you may experience a sudden spike in blood sugar levels, which can cause fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. This can be particularly dangerous for people with diabetes or other conditions that affect blood sugar levels.

Additionally, consuming too many mangoes can lead to vitamin A toxicity. Mangoes are rich in beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A that gives the fruit its bright orange color. While vitamin A is essential for healthy vision, skin, and immune function, consuming excessive amounts of beta-carotene can lead to a condition called hypervitaminosis A, which can cause headaches, dizziness, and even liver damage.

In conclusion, while mangoes are a delicious and nutritious fruit, they should be consumed in moderation. Overeating mangoes can lead to several negative side effects, including digestive issues, allergic reactions, weight gain, blood sugar imbalances, and vitamin A toxicity. To enjoy the health benefits of mangoes without the risk of side effects, it is recommended to consume them in small quantities as part of a balanced and varied diet.
