New Delhi, 03 September 2025: Sehat Hai Zaruri! In this segment, we spoke with Dr. Sutopa Banerjee, Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, about one of the most crucial yet often ignored phases in a woman’s life—menopause.

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years, typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. However, in some cases, early menopause can occur due to genetics, lifestyle factors, autoimmune disorders, or medical treatments like chemotherapy and surgery. According to Dr. Banerjee, ignoring menopause symptoms can pose health risks that extend beyond reproductive health.

Common Symptoms of Menopause

Menopause is triggered by the decline of estrogen and progesterone levels, and the symptoms vary for every woman. The most common include:

  • Irregular periods – cycles may become shorter, longer, heavier, or lighter before stopping completely.
  • Hot flashes and night sweats – sudden warmth, flushing, and sweating that disrupt daily life and sleep.
  • Sleep disturbances – difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep due to hormonal imbalance.
  • Vaginal dryness – reduced estrogen levels can cause discomfort, itching, or pain during intimacy.
  • Mood swings and irritability – hormonal fluctuations can trigger anxiety, depression, or emotional instability.
  • Physical changes – weight gain, joint pain, thinning hair, and loss of bone density.

Why Ignoring Symptoms Can Be Dangerous

Dr. Banerjee highlights that untreated menopausal symptoms are not just discomforts—they may lead to serious long-term health concerns. Low estrogen levels increase the risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, urinary infections, and cognitive decline. Women who experience early menopause (before 40) face a higher risk of these complications.

The Right Approach to Menopause

While menopause is inevitable, managing it well is essential. Dr. Banerjee advises:

  • Regular health check-ups for bone health, heart health, and hormone levels.
  • Lifestyle changes like a balanced diet, exercise, and stress management to ease symptoms.
  • Medical support such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or supplements when prescribed.

Menopause is not a disease but a natural transition. Still, ignoring its symptoms can be harmful. Women should seek timely medical advice, adopt healthy habits, and embrace this phase with awareness and confidence.
