International Yoga Day 2020: Yoga Is Key To Happy, Healthy Life

June 21 is celebrated as International Yoga Day 2020 and the theme of this year’s World Yoga Day 2020 is ‘Yoga at Home, Yoga with Family.’ The theme has been carefully picked because of the coronavirus pandemic which has forced people to follow norms of social distancing. “Due to the contagious nature of COVID-19, no mass gathering would be advisable this year. Hence, this year the ministry is encouraging people to practice yoga at their homes, with participation from the entire family,” the AYUSH Ministry said in a statement.

There are several health benefits of yoga. From improving mental and physical health to be a great stress buster, here are some of its health benefits.

Sleep Better: It has been proved that yoga has some calming benefits and this can help in insomnia. Regular yoga can relax your mind and help you sleep well at night. Savasana, viparti karani, and reclining butterfly are some poses that can be helpful.

Weight Loss: Active and intense yoga along with healthy eating habits can be beneficial to lose weight. Yoga relieves stress, one of the causes of weight gain. Bridge pose, Surya Namaskar, twisted chair pose are some of the yoga poses that help you lose weight.

Relieve Stress: Yoga reduces stress as it relaxes you. Regular yoga practice builds the ability to calm, relax, and focus. Savasana, side stretches, child pose, standing forward bends are some of the poses that can offer relief from stress.

Body Strength: Some yoga poses can improve body strength. Side planks, plank pose, handstands are some of the yoga asanas that can be good strength training.

Relieve Pain: Be it a normal pain or chronic one, yoga can be beneficial. Regular yoga practice can help you. Surya Namaskar, downward-facing dog pose, seated forward bend, and bow poses can help in chronic pain.
