White discharge or vaginal discharge is a common and natural phenomenon in women. The cervix and vagina produce a fluid to maintain the hygiene and health. The consistency, colour, and odour of vaginal discharge might differ based on the menstrual cycle, hormonal fluctuations, sexual activity, and overall health.

But it is important to note that any type of abnormal discharge, should be consulted with a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions or infections. However, there are some home remedies that may help relieve discomfort associated with white discharge:

  1. Apple cider vinegar: Adding a few teaspoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to a warm bath and soaking for fifteen to twenty minutes has helped some people relieve the symptoms of vaginal discharge. It is advisable to dilute the vinegar and conduct a patch test on a small area of skin before usage, as this remedy may not be appropriate for everyone and may cause irritation in certain circumstances.
  2. Probiotics: Eating meals high in probiotics or taking probiotic supplements may encourage the body’s natural bacteria to proliferate and maintain vaginal health. Probiotic-rich foods include fermented foods like sauerkraut, kefir, and yogurt with live cultures.
  3. Garlic: Due to its inherent antibacterial qualities, garlic may be able to prevent bacterial overgrowth and yeast infections. Adding raw garlic to your diet or consuming it alone may assist support healthy vaginal tissue. Garlic cloves can also be used as suppositories by wrapping them in gauze and putting them in the vagina overnight, though this treatment should only be used with caution and under a doctor’s supervision.
  4. Tea tree oil: Due to its antibacterial and antifungal qualities, tea tree oil may help reduce vaginal infection symptoms. Tea tree oil can irritate skin when applied directly, therefore it is important to dilute it with a carrier oil (like coconut oil) before using it topically. Avoid using tea tree oil internally or applying it directly to the vaginal area without dilution.
  5. Practice safe sex: If you are sexually active, wearing condoms can help stop the spread of STIs, which can cause abnormal discharge.
  6. Avoid douching: Douching should be avoided as it might worsen symptoms of abnormal discharge and disrupt the usual balance of bacteria in the vagina. It is advisable to completely refrain from douching and allow the body to retain its ideal pH balance.
  7. Maintain good hygiene: You can lessen irritation and pain by keeping the genital area dry and clean. To gently wash the region, use mild, unscented soap and water. Avoid using harsh or scented products as these could upset the natural balance of vaginal flora.
  8. Wear breathable underwear: Since cotton is more breathable better than synthetic materials and keeps the genital area dry, choose for cotton underwear. Stay away from wearing clothing that is too tight since it can retain moisture and encourage the growth of bacteria.
  9. Stay hydrated: Consuming an ample amount of water can aid in eliminating toxins from the body and preserving general vaginal health. To ensure that you are properly hydrated, try to consume eight glasses of water or more each day.

If home remedies do not provide relief or if symptoms worsen or persist, it is important to consult a doctor for the treatment of any underlying health issues.
