Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common problem that affects women more frequently. Due to UTI, women may experience several uncomfortable symptoms such as a burning sensation while urinating, pain during urination, and overall discomfort. If not treated on time, UTI can even affect the kidneys.

But did you know that UTI can also impact pregnancy? If left untreated, it may affect fertility and make it difficult to conceive. However, this does not mean that you cannot get pregnant because of UTI. To understand how UTI affects pregnancy, let’s take insights from Dr. Nidhi Rajotia, Unit Head – Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Artemis Hospitals.

What is UTI?

UTI, or Urinary Tract Infection, is one of the most common infections in women. It is a bacterial infection caused mainly by Escherichia coli (E. coli). It affects the urinary system and can lead to pain and a burning sensation during urination.

What Are the Symptoms of UTI?

Some common symptoms of UTI include:

  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Fever
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Blood in urine

How Can UTI Affect Conception?

  • UTI can cause pain and discomfort during urination, which may lead to discomfort during intercourse. This can reduce the frequency of physical intimacy, thereby lowering the chances of conception.
  • If not treated on time, the infection can spread upward and affect the kidneys and reproductive organs, which may impact fertility.
  • UTI can increase inflammation in the body, which may interfere with the process of the egg and sperm meeting, making conception difficult.
  • Recurrent UTIs can weaken the immune system, making it harder for the body to prepare for pregnancy.
  • Antibiotics are commonly used to treat UTI, and they may have an impact on pregnancy. Therefore, if you are planning to conceive, use antibiotics only under medical supervision.

What to Do When Planning Pregnancy?

  • If you experience a burning sensation while urinating, consult a doctor immediately.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and flush out bacteria from the body.
  • Maintain proper hygiene, especially before and after intercourse.
  • Avoid holding in urine, as it can increase the risk of infection.

Highlights

  • Urinary Tract Infection is more common in women.
  • It can affect pregnancy and fertility.
  • Consult a doctor if you experience burning during urination.
