American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Mangalagiri Leads the Way with Innovative Breast Cancer Surgery for High-Risk Patients

The American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Mangalagiri is excited to share a big step forward in breast cancer treatment. Recently, AOI helped three high-risk patients with breast cancer using a new way to numb the area for surgery. This is a big deal for cancer care.

Usually, breast cancer surgery involves using general anesthesia, which can be risky for patients with other health problems like lung disease, heart problems, or kidney disease.

To deal with this, AOI in Mangalagiri, Vijayawada tried a new method. They used a special numbing technique called Paravertebral block (PVB) along with pectoral nerves (PECS) block. This made the surgery safer for the patients, without the risks of general anesthesia.

Dr. Kalyan Polavarapu, a Surgical Oncologist at AOI, said, “Helping breast cancer patients with other health issues is tricky. Our aim is to give the best care while keeping risks low and patients safe.”

The patients treated were Mrs. V.L (67 years), Mrs. J.B (74 years), and Mrs. P.S (83 years). They were all at very high risk for general anesthesia because of their other health problems. But, despite the challenges, all three had their surgery without any problems and went home within three days.

Dr. Sreedevi, an Anesthesiologist at AOI, explained, “Paravertebral block (with ultrasound guidance) is about numbing the nerves near the spine, which helps block pain. This method is safe and works well for high-risk patients. By using Paravertebral and PECS blocks together, we could customize the numbing for each patient, leading to successful surgeries.”

Mahendra Reddy, the Regional Chief Operating Officer (RCOO) of AOI, Vijayawada, said, “At AOI, we’re always looking for new ways to help cancer patients. Treating these high-risk breast cancer patients shows our commitment to excellence and innovation in cancer care.”

AOI is dedicated to leading the way in cancer treatment, always working to give patients the best care possible.
