Tirzepatide: India To Finally Approve Weight Loss Drug ,Here’s How It Works

The Central Drug Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), India’s top drug regulator, has approved tirzepatide, the active component of the company Eli Lilly’s popular medications Mounjaro and Zepbound, by a subject expert committee.

Zepbound is a prescription injectable medication that was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year to combat adult obesity.

Eli Lilly and Company created the drug tirzepatide, which is mostly used to treat type 2 diabetes.

This substance is marketed as Zepbound for weight loss and Mounjaro for diabetes. Tirzepatide, however, will be imported and sold for diabetes rather than weight loss in India. The indication for obesity is being reviewed. As a dual agonist of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors, it replicates the actions of these endogenous hormones to assist in controlling blood sugar levels.

In reaction to meals, tirzepatide causes the pancreas to release more insulin. After eating, this lowers blood sugar levels. It lessens the hormone glucagon’s release, which raises blood sugar levels.

Decreased glucagon levels aid in lessening the liver’s production of glucose. Then, it slows down the stomach’s emptying, which can lessen the speed at which glucose enters the bloodstream following a meal and help prevent blood sugar spikes after meals.

Tirzepatide works on the brain’s appetite centers to help decrease food intake and hunger, which may aid in weight loss.

What are Side Effects?

Tirzepatide has some side effects but is also useful in the management of type 2 diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes should not use Mounjaro (tirzepatide for type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus).

Constipation, indigestion, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and stomach (abdominal) pain are typical side effects. Serious side effects include severe stomach issues, allergic reactions, low blood sugar when combined with other medications, pancreatitis or pancreas inflammation, vision changes, and gallbladder issues. The manufacturer advises notifying your healthcare provider straight away if any side effects appear.
