Students at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Hyderabad’s Sultanpur campus were horrified when they discovered a rat swimming in chutney served at their hostel mess. A student recorded a video of the rat moving through a large container of chutney, and the clip quickly went viral, raising serious concerns about food safety at the university.
The unsettling incident happened on Monday night and has sparked widespread outrage among students and the public. Students at JNTU have recently been protesting against the poor and unhygienic conditions of their hostel food, and this incident has only intensified their concerns.
In response to the video, authorities have instructed the district administration to submit a detailed report on the incident. The situation has drawn attention to the urgent need for better food safety measures at the university.
Last month, Telangana food safety officials conducted inspections at the JNTU Sultanpur campus in Sangareddy. The inspections revealed significant violations in the canteen’s kitchen, including poor sanitation and improper food handling practices. This raid came shortly after a similar inspection at JNTU Kukatpally, where similar issues were found.
During the inspection at Sultanpur, officials discovered 15 kg of maida flour infested with black beetles and 25 kg of vegetables contaminated with fungus. Both were immediately discarded.
The storeroom was found to be unhygienic, with rodent presence and excessive rat excreta. The kitchen, wash area, and dining area were also in unsanitary conditions.
Additionally, food handlers were not wearing proper protective gear like head caps and aprons, and there were no medical records for them. The RO water plant was also found to be non-operational.
These findings have highlighted the need for immediate action to ensure the safety and hygiene of food served to students at JNTU.
