A pregnant woman living in Ganeshnagar, Erandwane, has tested positive for the Zika virus. This brings the total number of Zika cases in the city to five. In response, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started a fever survey in the Erandwane and Mundhwa areas to identify more potential cases.

The woman, who was diagnosed with Zika, had a sonography test in May that showed no harm to her or her baby. The health department has confirmed that she is stable and not showing any further symptoms.

Previously, two other cases of Zika were reported in Erandwane: a 46-year-old doctor and his 15-year-old daughter. In addition to the pregnant woman, a 47-year-old woman and her 22-year-old son from Mundhwa have also tested positive for the virus. This makes a total of five cases in Pune.

To manage the situation, blood samples from the families of the infected individuals and others showing fever symptoms have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing.

Preventive Measures

With the monsoon season increasing the risk of diseases spread by mosquitoes, like Zika, the PMC is urging all private labs and hospitals to report cases immediately. The health department has begun fogging in 100 houses in both Erandwane and Mundhwa to kill mosquitoes that might be breeding indoors.

Additionally, potential mosquito breeding sites at construction sites are being identified and eliminated. Building owners have been notified to ensure these sites are kept mosquito-free, according to Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Health Officer of the PMC.

How Can You Protect Yourself from Mosquito-Borne Diseases?

Here are some tips to stay safe from mosquito-borne diseases:

– Wear clothes that cover your body.

– Use mosquito-repellent creams.

– Sleep under mosquito nets.

– Avoid water accumulation in places like refrigerators, coolers, plant pots, plastic cups, coconut shells, and tires.

These measures are essential to prevent the spread of Zika and other mosquito-borne illnesses.
