The month of October is observed as National Healthy Lung Month to promote awareness about lung ailments and other related infections. Adequate oxygen is required for the body to remain healthy and for this, optimal health of the lungs is essential. Due to certain changes in environment, lifestyle, and issues linked to diet, the risk of various forms of lung-related ailments has shot up significantly in the last decade. Experts have said that the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected people’s respiratory organs, therefore, people need to adapt to certain types of diet that contain specific vegetables, which are quite advantageous for lung health. Here are some expert tips that help people maintain optimum lung health.

Health experts say that smoking is damaging to the lungs. It significantly poses the risk of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Smoking contracts the airways that leads to difficulty in breathing and damage to the lung tissue increasing the risk of cancer. Avoiding both indoor and outdoor pollution is essential to prevent lung-related issues. Constant exposure to indoor air pollution can cause several serious lung ailments. Experts say that people should maintain proper ventilation in their rooms. People should take measures such as maintaining oral hygiene to clear out germs found in the mouth and regularly washing hands with soap and water to avert frequent respiratory infections and colds during the flu season. Flu season can adversely affect the lungs.

Health experts recommend that along with a healthy diet rich in green vegetables, healthy fat, and other nutrients, it is crucial for people of all age ranges to incorporate physical exercise in their daily routine. People should adapt to a habit of regular respiratory workouts to maintain the optimal health of the lungs. Respiratory exercises improve the lungs and avert certain types of health risks.
