New Delhi, 30 July 2025: Bengaluru is facing a massive dengue outbreak, with over 440 cases reported in just a month, prompting the BBMP to issue an urgent public health warning. Hospitals across the city are witnessing a surge in suspected and confirmed cases as the monsoon rains fuel mosquito breeding in stagnant water.

Dengue, a viral infection spread by the Aedes mosquito, can turn deadly if not detected and treated early. As cases continue to rise, recognizing the early warning signs is essential to protect yourself and your family.

What Is Dengue and How Is It Spread?

Dengue caused by the dengue virus, which spreads through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes—aggressive day-biters that breed in clean, stagnant water commonly found in coolers, open containers, plant trays, and discarded tires.

Once infected, symptoms usually appear within 4–10 days and can range from mild to severe.

Early Symptoms of Dengue to Watch Out For

In the early phase, dengue symptoms can mimic viral fever or flu, making them easy to ignore. Here’s what to watch for:

Warning Signs of Severe Dengue

In some cases, the infection can progress to severe dengue, a potentially life-threatening condition that requires immediate hospitalization. Watch for these red-flag symptoms:

  • Persistent abdominal pain
  • Bleeding from gums or nose
  • Blood in vomit or stool
  • Rapid breathing
  • Extreme fatigue, restlessness, or confusion
  • Drop in platelet count

If you or someone you know is showing these signs, don’t delay medical help.

How To Stay Safe During the Dengue Outbreak

BBMP and health officials urge residents to take the following preventive steps:

  • Eliminate standing water in and around your home
  • Use mosquito repellents and wear full-sleeved clothing
  • Ensure windows and doors covered with mosquito screens
  • Avoid going out at dawn and dusk when Aedes mosquitoes are most active
  • Monitor fever and get tested early if symptoms develop

What To Keep In Mind?

With the current dengue crisis intensifying in Bengaluru, awareness and early action are key. Don’t brush off symptoms as seasonal flu—early diagnosis can save lives. Stay protected, act fast, and help prevent the spread.
