How To Manage Stretch Marks During And Post-Pregnancy

Stretch marks are fine lines on the body that develop in nine out of ten pregnancies. Most pregnant women see these lines on their belly in the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy. These marks are caused by the rapid growth of the body or over-stretching, and are common during and post-pregnancy.

The easiest and most convenient way of reducing these marks is by following a pregnancy skincare regimen, health experts have said.

Stretch marks form in the dermis part of the skin when the connective tissue under the skin is stretched out beyond its flexibility capability. As the skin is stretched out, the collagen fiber in the body makes the skin more elastic as it becomes weakened. As this protein’s normal production cycle is interrupted, the marks may show up as skin gets stretched.

It often appears on the belly, thighs, breasts, and hips, during the second trimester of pregnancy.

Stretch marks are common things during pregnancy. It doesn’t cause any vital medical issues. However for some women, it can be a cosmetic concern as these marks are not considered aesthetically appealing.

“Skin tends to change during pregnancy. Regular skincare routine probably won’t be very effective during this phase. The nourishment that skin requires during this phase is very essential and the best part is that with early intervention, these skin changes may fade or disappear after childbirth”, says Dr. Prathibha Babshet, Ayurveda expert, R&D, The Himalaya Drug Company.

Three-step skincare routine for stretch marks

Dr. Prathibha shared an essential three-step skincare routine for stretch marks during and post-pregnancy.

  • Massage gently before bedtime: A massage is the most effective way to reduce stretch marks. Indulging in a light massage every night before bed helps in building skin elasticity while increasing blood flow. New moms can include this as part of their bedtime routine. The message results in a lightening of the marks.
  • Moisturize after a shower- When the moisture level in the skin is maintained, it not only results in soft and supple skin but also helps reduce itchiness and the appearance of stretch marks. Herb-oil helps provide deeper moisturization, especially when used after a shower. Cocoa butter keeps your skin moisturized and healthy. It is good for you as it prevents stretch marks from developing in the first place.

  • Healthy Diet– It is advisable to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals boost skin health. Fruits, such as oranges and lemons, are an important source for the development of collagen.

The experts also stressed that, apart from a good skincare regimen, it is equally important to take care of your health and body.

Drinking enough water also helps keep the skin hydrated. “Maintain a healthy weight by eating a balanced diet. Regular exercises can also help to prevent stretch marks,” Dr. Prathibha noted.
