New Delhi, August 20: The Supreme Court will hear a suo motu petition. On the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical Hospital in Kolkata today.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra will hear the case. Which has been lists as the first item on the day’s agenda. The court’s intervention seen as a crucial step in ensuring justice. The victim and addressing the broader issue of safety and security for medical professionals.

The suo motu case in the matter is titled. “In Re: Alleged rape and murder incident of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Kolkata, and related issue.” The plea seeks to widen the scope of judicial scrutiny in the case. And asumes significance in view of the fact that Calcutta High Court is already in action and has transferred the probe into the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The plea also keeps in mind the nationwide outrage regarding the horrific murder of the postgraduate student at the medical college. The doctor’s protests and their demands of safety at hospitals.

The horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate medical student has sent shockwaves across the nation. In a swift response to the outrage. The Supreme Court is set to begin hearing a suo motu case on the matter today at 10:30 AM.

The case has ignited widespread protests from doctors and students demanding justice for the victim and stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The tragic event has also brought to light the issue of safety and security for medical professionals. Especially women, in healthcare institutions across the country.

The incident has also raised questions about the state government’s handling of the case and the overall law and order situation in West Bengal. The state has come under intense criticism for its alleged mishandling of the investigation. Which has led to widespread protests and demands for the removal of the state’s home minister.

Health services across the country have been hit as doctors’ strikes enter their 10th day. The Union health ministry has approved a 25 per cent enhancement in security deployment at central hospitals, in response to doctors demands to ensure safety.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating into the case to understand the root cause of the entire case. The CBI took over the case from Kolkata police as per a Calcutta high court order.

As the nation awaits the Supreme Court’s verdict, the case has sparked a larger conversation about women’s safety. The rights of medical professionals, and the accountability of authorities in ensuring the security of citizens.

The outcome of the case is expected to have far-reaching implications for the healthcare sector and the overall criminal justice system in the country.
