Healthwire bureau
New Delhi,January 25: Concerned with the higher number of causalities due to obstetrics hemorrhage, the Dharbhanga district administration in Bihar is toying with the idea to procure Non-pneumatic anti shock garment (NASG) to prevent postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).

District Magistrate Thiyagrajan SM said that obstetrics hemorrhage accounted for as many as nine deaths in the district in December last year.

He said that these cases were tracked with the help of WonderApp launched recently.

The medical condition triggers more bleeding in women after the birth of a baby.

The rapid loss of blood because of PPH reduces the body’s blood pressure and can even cause death.

“In order to combat this medical situation, adoption of strategy is in the pipeline to implement use of Non-pneumatic Anti Shock Garment (NASG) at primary health care facilities through district health society (DSH) in the district”, informed Mr Thiyagrajan .

He said that this simple device would be helpful for women to survive extended delays in getting to a referral hospital and getting the treatment that they need.

It can be applied by a health worker after a short and simple training, said the DM adding that the district would soon get 20 units of NASG through a a non-governmental organisation.

He said that in course of time more such devices would be procured through the district health society.

Highlighting the functioning of the NASG, he said that it applies pressure to the lower body and abdomen of woman patients, thereby forcing the blood that was getting accumulated in the pelvic area to spread to other organs of the body.
