Health Minister Directs Vigilance in India
Amid a surge in Monkeypox cases reported in several countries, India’s Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, has instructed health officials to closely monitor the situation in the country. The outbreak has raised global health concerns, and India is taking precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the viral infection.
Isolation and Investigation Measures Implemented
In response to the outbreak, the National Centre for Disease Control and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have been directed to be vigilant. Health officials have been instructed to identify and isolate any individuals displaying symptoms of Monkeypox, especially those with a recent travel history to affected countries. Samples of suspected cases will be sent to the BSL4 facility at the National Institute of Virology in Pune for further investigation.
Monkeypox: A Lesser-Known Viral Infection
Monkeypox is a viral infection that shares similarities with smallpox but is generally milder in its symptoms. Patients typically experience fever, rashes, and swollen lymph nodes, which may lead to various medical complications. The disease is usually self-limited, lasting for about two to four weeks. However, in severe cases, the case fatality ratio has been observed to range from 3% to 6%, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Monkeypox virus is primarily transmitted through close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials like bedding. In some instances, the disease can be transmitted from an infected mother to her fetus during pregnancy or through close contact during and after birth, leading to congenital Monkeypox. While close physical contact is a known risk factor for transmission, the potential for sexual transmission remains uncertain and requires further investigation.
