New Delhi, August 23: The global monkeypox outbreak raise concerns about the virus’s spread and the populations most susceptible to infection. While anyone can contract mpox, certain individuals are at a higher risk due to various factors.

Understanding Mpox Transmission Process

This is primarily spread through close physical contact, including:

  1. Skin-to-skin contact
  2. Contact with body fluids or lesions
  3. Respiratory droplets during prolonged face-to-face contact
  4. Contact with contaminated materials, such as bedding or clothing

High-Risk Groups

Several groups are considers at a higher risk of contracting it:

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM): The majority of report cases have occurred in MSM. Particularly those with multiple sexual partners. This is likely due to the nature of sexual transmission and social networks within this community.
  • Healthcare workers: Healthcare workers who come into contact with infected individuals or their bodily fluids are at an increased risk of exposure.
  • Household contacts: Individuals who live with or have close contact with someone infected with it may be at risk.
  • Immunocompromised individuals: People with weakened immune systems, such as those living with HIV/AIDS or undergoing cancer treatment, are more susceptible to severe illness and complications from it.
  • Children: While children are generally less likely to develop severe symptoms, they can still contract it and spread the virus.

Factors Affecting Risk Of Catching Mpox Virus Infection

Several factors can influence an individual’s risk of contracting mpox:

  • Number of sexual partners: People with multiple sexual partners are at a higher risk, especially if those partners are also at risk.
  • Travel history: Individuals who have traveled to areas with known mpox outbreaks may be at a higher risk.
  • Exposure to infected individuals: Close contact with someone who infects with it’s increases the risk of transmission.
  • Underlying health conditions: Individuals with certain underlying health conditions, such as HIV/AIDS or asthma, may be at a higher risk of severe illness.

Prevention Measures: How To Stay Safe From Catching Mpox Virus?

While the risk of mpox may be higher for certain groups, everyone can take steps to protect themselves from infection. These measures include:

  • Vaccination: The mpox vaccine is available and can provide protection against the virus.
  • Safe sexual practices: Using condoms and limiting the number of sexual partners can reduce the risk of transmission.
  • Good hygiene: Washing hands frequently and avoiding close contact with people who are sick can help prevent the spread of it.
  • Awareness and education: Staying informed about the latest developments regarding mpox and following public health guidelines can help protect oneself and others.
