Recent studies suggest that GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), the class of drugs to which Ozempic belongs, may significantly reduce the risk of various obesity-related cancers.
Can Use of Ozempic Reduce Cancer Risk?
A comprehensive study involving over 1.6 million patients with type 2 diabetes revealed that those treated with GLP-1RAs had a notably lower risk of developing 10 out of 13 obesity-associated cancers compared to those on insulin therapy. These cancers include colorectal, endometrial, pancreatic, and ovarian cancers .
In another study focusing on colorectal cancer, researchers analyzed data from nearly 2 million individuals under 50 with type 2 diabetes. The findings indicated that patients using semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, had a significantly reduced incidence of colorectal cancer compared to those not on the medication .
