Fatty liver is a medical condition in which fat progressively accumulates in the liver. It is also known as hepatic steatosis. Many people believe that if they have fatty liver, then any stomach issues related to gastric or indigestion are the result of the ailment, but this is not true. One of the main reasons of fatty liver is consumption of alcohol, apart from that there are few medicines which can cause the fat to build up in the liver. In addition, viral illnesses like hepatitis B and hepatitis C can harm the liver and cause fat to accumulate there. Moreover, lifestyle-related illnesses like high blood cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension are also some of the causes.
Fatty liver disease symptoms result into loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. It can also cause higher body weight, prediabetes, low physical activity, hyperlipidaemia, and digestive issues. Let us talk about the types of fatty liver. Firstly, we should know that fatty liver is diagnosed when more than 5% of the weight of the liver is fat. It can be divided into two types – non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic fatty liver disease. Non-alcoholic disease is not that severe but the alcoholic disease is a more harmful condition for the human body.
Cholesterol in the body slowly enters the liver and becomes reason for fatty liver. This ailment is called non – alcoholic fatty liver disease. In short it is called NAFLD. This is very common and is estimated to affect 30% of the world population. While most cases are benign and cause no liver damage, some people may develop non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a disorder that causes inflammation of the liver and can cause the liver tissues to be destroyed. Severe injury may lead to cirrhosis of the liver and ultimately liver failure through scarring. The majority of NAFLD patients may not exhibit any symptoms, while some may experience malaise, exhaustion, or soreness or discomfort in the upper right abdomen. Weakness, jaundice, itchy skin, loss of appetite, and nausea are some of the symptoms that could appear in NASH. Widespread liver tissue scarring in the advanced stage may result in reduced liver blood flow, raising blood pressure in the hepatic portal vein, which supplies blood to the liver. Portal is the term for this state. Usually, simple fatty liver does not progress to a more serious illness. This disease is also reversible by making small changes in lifestyle such as weight loss, exercise, and healthy eating.
Alcoholic fatty liver disease is which happens due to alcohol consumption. People who consume alcohol excessively may develop this disease. As the liver breaks down the excess alcohol, it can generate harmful substances. Alcoholic fatty liver can also develop into alcoholic hepatitis or cirrhosis. The most severe form of liver disease is cirrhosis. Usually, it happens when good liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue. It can lead to liver failure. If liver damage is irreversible, the best course of action for those who have demonstrated a commitment to ongoing alcohol abstinence is a liver transplant.
