Hospitals are running out of bed for COVDI-19 patients as the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise. This is why some private hospitals of Delhi-NCR have started ‘home treatment’ package and urging patients to avoid hospitalization unless necessary.

The Delhi government has already said that coronavirus positive persons are eligible for home treatment if they can completely isolate themselves. The decision is meant to reduce some burden of hospitals that are facing a tough time while providing beds to COVID-19 patients.

Among those who are providing such services are Max Healthcare, Fortis, Saroj Hospital, and Medanta. These hospitals have several patients using their home care services.

Dr Ritu Garg, Zonal Director, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram said that the step of home isolation for patients who are asymptomatic will help them to stay not only at the comfort of their home, this way medical professionals will be able to offer extensive care to the patients who are critical and require comprehensive medical care.

“The patient can avail consultation through video or call who will monitor the patient’s medical needs. Patients will also consult from nutritionists, psychologists, and can avail a telerehabilitation call. Guidelines for the caregiver and how to appropriately maintain distance from the patient is also given. Our consultants are available on call in case the symptoms vary and the patient requires medical attention or hospitalisation,” she added.

According to Saroj Hospital, they are urging patients to avoid hospitalization unless necessary and are promoting home treatment with various packages which include all required hardware, medicines, and consultations.

Experts have welcomed the move by hospital saying that if the patient doesn’t have any breathing problems or pneumonia, he should stay home.

“A patient will get more infections if he is in a hospital, Dr Jacob John, professor emeritus and former head of virology at Christian Medical College, Vellore was quoted as saying by a newspaper.

According to reports, the Delhi government has tied-up with Portea – a private medical services provider – to monitor people getting home treatment or home isolation.
