Progress Update on PMSSY: 22 New AIIMS and 157 Nursing Colleges Approved
Government of India’s Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) continues to expand healthcare infrastructure.
In its relentless efforts to enhance healthcare accessibility and medical education, the Government of India is actively implementing the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The visionary scheme aims to rectify regional imbalances in affordable tertiary healthcare services and augment facilities for quality medical education across the nation.
22 new AIIMS and 75 GMCIs upgradation projects in various phases of implementation.
Under the first component of PMSSY, which focuses on setting up All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a total of 22 new AIIMS institutions have received approval. These institutions are now at different stages of implementation, and once fully operational, they are expected to cater to the medical needs of diverse regions, providing top-notch healthcare and medical research facilities.
Additionally, the second component of PMSSY, which involves the upgradation of existing Government Medical Colleges/Institutions (GMCIs), has seen 75 projects gaining approval. This initiative seeks to improve the infrastructure and medical facilities of these institutions to deliver better healthcare services to the citizens.
Budget Speech 2023-24 announces establishment of 157 Nursing Colleges.
A significant development in the implementation of PMSSY is the inclusion of Nursing Colleges. Along with the establishment of 22 new AIIMS institutions, provisions have been made for the setup of 157 Nursing Colleges, as announced in the Budget Speech for the financial year 2023-24. These nursing colleges will play a crucial role in nurturing a skilled and compassionate healthcare workforce, supporting the growing medical demands of the nation.
The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, shared these updates in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, reaffirming the government’s commitment to creating a robust healthcare ecosystem in India.
