Lemons are a citrus fruit belonging to the Rutaceae family. They are known for their bitter, sour bitter flavor and sunny yellow color. They’re loaded with antioxidants and vitamin C that enhance numerous aspects of health. Lemon water is popular for reducing the risk of kidney stones, encouraging vitamin C consumption, and improving digestion. Here we will discuss certain health benefits of including lemons in the daily diet regime.
Kidney stones are solid deposits made of minerals that accumulate in the urinary tract. Nearly 10 percent of people are affected by kidney stones. Elevating levels of a weak acid called urine citrate and turning urine more alkaline can avert kidney stones. Lemons have a type of citrate known as citric acid that aids in elevating urine citrate levels. Experts say a daily intake of four ounces of lemon juice with water can prevent kidney stones. Lemons are packed with vitamin C and other antioxidants that safeguard cells from damage caused by free radicals. Intake of vitamin C can avert atherosclerosis, which is a health issue that shoots up the risk of heart attack and stroke. Consuming lemons can elevate the total intake of vegetables and fruit. A study has shown that greater consumption of veggies and fruits is linked to reduced odds of cardiovascular disease and all-cause fatality.
One lemon has more than 30 percent of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C that is essential for iron absorption and easing the risk of heart ailments. Vitamin C also aids in absorbing nonheme iron found in plants and iron-stimulated foods such as cereals and bread. Antioxidants found in lemons avert cell damage caused by cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is a cluster of severe, progressive lung ailments that restrict airflow to the lungs and lead to troubled breathing. Although many studies have shown that citrus fruits are loaded with antioxidants, a recent study indicates that citrus peel has even greater amounts of healthy antioxidants.
