Mpox Scare In India: AIIMS Delhi Issues Protocol for Suspected Monkeypox Cases

New Delhi, August 21: In light of the global Mpox outbreak. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has issued a comprehensive protocol for handling patients with suspected symptoms of the viral disease. While India has not reported any confirmed cases yet, the health authorities are taking proactive measures to prevent its spread.

In a notification the premier medical institute issued standard operating procedure (SOP). Which details the necessary steps to handle Monkeypox cases at the AIIMS emergency department.

Mpox Outbreak In India: How Is The Country Preparing?

The World Health Organisation, which declare Mpox a global health emergency last week. Said it is not another Covid-19 as much is already known about the virus and the means to control it.

Here are the SOPs

Early Detection: According to the protocol upon arrival. Patients with fever, rash, or a history of contact with confirmed mpox cases should be flagged for immediate assessment.

Symptom Identification: Medical staff have been instruct to identify key symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, and characteristic skin lesions.

Isolation: Suspects monkeypox patients must be promptly isolate in designated areas to prevent further transmission.

Isolation Wards: AIIMS Delhi has designated beds 33, 34, 35, and 36 in AB-7 for isolating suspected monkeypox cases.

Treatment Allocation: These beds will be allocate to monkeypox patients upon recommendation from the emergency chief medical officer, and treatment will be administered by the medicine department.

IDSP Notification: The Integrate Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) must be notify at 8745011784 when a suspect of monkeypox case is identify.

Patient Information: IDSP teams will be provided with patient details, including medical history, clinical findings, and contact information.

Referral to Safdarjung Hospital: Patients suspects of having monkeypox will be refer to Safdarjung Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Dedicated Ambulance: AIIMS has assigned a specific ambulance for transporting suspected monkeypox patients to Safdarjung Hospital. Emergency staff must contact the ambulance coordinator at 8929683898 to arrange transportation.

Infection Control: Strict infection control measures must be adhere to when handling patients. Staff required to use personal protective equipment and maintain proper documentation of patient details, symptoms, and referral processes.

What Is The Government Doing?

Amid the mpox outbreak in neighbouring countries, the Union Health Ministry has asked all airports as well as authorities at land ports on borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan to remain alert about incoming international passengers reporting mpox symptoms, official sources said on Sunday.

The ministry has identified three Centre-run hospitals — Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Safdarjung and Lady Hardinge — as nodal centres in the national capital for isolation, management and treatment of any patient with mpox.
