The pricing negotiation of COVID-19 vaccine ZyCov-D between the central government and Zydus Cadila is still going on according to reports. As per the government sources, the final decision is expected by this week. The government is negotiating for a reduction in the price of the vaccine.
The decision of the pricing is taking time as it is owing to two major factors:
- One is that it is a three-dose vaccine and the other is its application
- A needle-free applicator or a jet injector is used for the application of the ZyCov-D vaccine, which can be used to vaccinate 10,000 people.
The government sources told ANI that the price from the government is expected to be around Rs 300 per dose.
Underlining the dilemma of the government, “The final cost of ZyCov-D has not been finalised yet because the cost of the special applicator that will be used for the vaccine is around Rs 90 and the jet injector costs Rs 30,000.”
“The applicator that costs Rs 90 has to be replaced after every person and the jet injector has to be replaced by after 20,000 shots. We have to manage a cost in a manner that it remains reasonable,” they added. According to government sources, both the central government and Zydus will finalise a price soon. Earlier in the Covid briefing, Niti Aayog member (health) Dr VK Paul admitted that the price of the vaccine is a clear issue.
“Zydus Cadila DNA vaccine for practical implementation in the vaccination programme, all preparations on. We are constantly talking to them and the price is clearly an issue. We will make a decision soon and with all preparations, it should become a part of the national vaccination programme,” he said.
The ZyCoV-D vaccine is a needle- free vaccine and would be administered intradermally which is to be done by using PharmaJet, a needle- free applicator that ensures simple vaccination. This will help in administering the vaccine to whelps.
As per Zydus Cadila, the company also plans to seek imprimatur for the two- potion regime of the vaccine. The trials for the same are underway, considering the burden on healthcare and the outgo of buying three potions. Each potion is a 2 mg x 3 potion, which makes it a vaccine of six mg in total.
The ZyCoV-D vaccine is a plasmid DNA vaccine. It usesnon-replicating DNA scraps. As per Zydus Cadila, the vaccine which when administered produces the halberd protein of the SARS-CoV-2 antivenom and elicits an invulnerable response interposed by the cellular and humoral arm of the natural invulnerable system, which plays a vital purpose in protection from illness as well as viral permission.
