SRCC Children’s Hospital Launches ACT Clinic to Empower Young Cancer Survivors

Collaboration between SRCC Children’s Hospital and Indian Cancer Society aims to provide comprehensive support for cancer survivors

Mumbai, July 14, 2023 – SRCC Children’s Hospital, managed by Narayana Health in Mumbai, has joined hands with the Indian Cancer Society to establish the After Completion of Therapy (ACT) clinic. This initiative aims to empower young cancer survivors by offering them a comprehensive assessment of their current condition and guidance for their future journey. The clinic focuses on addressing the physical and psycho-social effects that may have resulted from their cancer treatment.

According to medical experts, a pediatric cancer patient is considered a survivor two years after completing cancer treatment without any relapse. During the initial two years, patients receive regular follow-up care for relapse surveillance. However, even after this period, it is important to continue providing care to address the potential long-term effects of cancer treatment. The ACT clinic at SRCC Children’s Hospital plays a vital role in diagnosing and rehabilitating these long-term effects.

Dr. Purna Kurkure, Head of the Division of Pediatric Oncology & BMT at SRCC Children’s Hospital, highlighted the significance of the ACT Clinic in creating a platform for childhood cancer survivors. The clinic not only provides support to survivors but also raises public awareness about the curability of childhood cancers when diagnosed and treated appropriately. Dr. Kurkure also emphasized the integration of oncology and psycho-oncology training into the clinic’s curriculum, which will eventually facilitate research in cancer survivorship in India.

Expressing gratitude for the collaboration, Dr. Vijay Singh, Regional Director of the Karnataka cluster and West India at Narayana Health, thanked the Indian Cancer Society for their partnership in launching the ACT clinic at SRCC Children’s Hospital. Dr. Singh commended the spirit of resilience demonstrated by cancer survivors and believed that this initiative would contribute to their complete rehabilitation, empowering them to emerge as victors.

The establishment of the ACT clinic reflects SRCC Children’s Hospital and the Indian Cancer Society’s commitment to supporting cancer survivors throughout their journey. By providing comprehensive care and creating a platform for survivors, this collaboration aims to make a lasting impact on their lives.
