The impact of Covid-19 on women’s mental health is a very important topic. Although the fatality rate has been twice higher for men than for women, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected women more than men. Women suffered more both as frontline workers and at home. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, have intensified.
Millions have been affected by COVID-19 since the first cases were reported last year. The socio-economic impact of this virus has been devastating, leaving so many women in sustained isolation, some having lost their jobs and feeling trapped with anxiety and fear. The mental health and stress women are experiencing due to COVID-19 are extraordinary.
“Women’s health has always been important, especially around women’s day, when we are talking about all things women. As far as the Covid pandemic is concerned it has an unprecedented effect on every aspect of human life. Stress has been very high. We also saw patients who suffered from mental health issues due to the increased rate of domestic violence during the pandemic. People are under stress because they have been staying together under one roof for a long period of time, without having an opportunity to release that stress, to go outside, to visit a place. They don’t have an opportunity to cope with the stress by visiting a friend or doing something else, says Dr. Jyoti Kapoor, Sr. Consultant Psychiatry and Founder of Manasthali, in an exclusive interaction with HealthWire’s special correspondent Sneha Kumari.
