Artificial Intelligence’s Potential In Healthcare

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has increased in various domains off late to resolve complex issues. Likewise, the use of artificial intelligence has increased in the health industry too.

This has transformed the health sector in many ways. But when and where did the use of AI started in the healthcare sector?

According to Dr. Taha Kass-Hout, general manager for healthcare and AI, and chief medical officer at Amazon Web Services, the use of artificial intelligence in health care is not new and a 1979 project used artificial intelligence and applied it to infection such sepsis and meningitis.

“AI in medicine even goes back to 1964 with Eliza, the very first chatbot, which was a conversational tool that recreated the conversation between a psychotherapist and a patient,” he was quoted as saying by HealthcareITNews.

These days, AI is being used in a myriad of places including clinical laboratories, hospitals, and, research facilities. This is because of the reason that it offers a number of advantages over traditional analytics.

“If you look at the overall value of why AI is really important, especially in our current situation with the global pandemic we live in, 50% of the world’s population has no access to essential healthcare,” Kass-Hout stated.

“If you look at the United States alone, 10% of the population has no insurance, and 30% of the working population are underinsured, and insurance costs per individual have reached over $20,000-$30,000 in the last year alone.”

He also said that it is projected that there will be a shortage of AI in more than 120,000 clinics of the US over the next decade.

AI has an important role to play in the healthcare sector and there several ways in which it is being used. For example, Electronic Health Record (EHR) developers are now using artificial intelligence to develop more intuitive interfaces.

It is also being used in smart devices to bring everything in real-time. In the healthcare sector, smart devices play a crucial role as they monitor patients in the ICU. The ability can be enhanced by using AI.
