At a time when masks are thought to be the most effective protection against the Covid-19 infection, DM of Bihar’s Purnia district, Rahul Kumar has taken an initiative which not only ensures that every household in the district has masks, but people are also being encouraged to distribute masks to others.
The district administration has distributed masks to around three lakh people. The DM also appealed to community to innovate new COVID-19 solutions.
His appeal resulted in huge production of home-made masks at every level, right from Panchayat level to college level, ensuring that the district does not run short of supply of masks.
The DM has succeeded in making face masks a public movement in the district.
DM Rahul Kumar himself is educating people about how to make their own hand sanitizers with ingredients they already have at home.
According to Rahul Kumar, as soon as the crisis erupted, and he realised the importance of face masks and sanitizers, he immediately got into actions.
Awareness together with jugaad has led to a situation where supply of masks is more than the demand.
Rahul Kumar made headlines across the country in December 2015 when he ate mid-day meal in school as part of a social campaign to remove untouchability in Chhapra, Bihar.
His efforts under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean Indian Campaign) to turn his district open-defecation free also won him accolades.
Rahul, a 2011 batch IAS, is also very popular on social media, and has a huge fan following.
